Washington, D.C. March 26, 2025 – The Chair of the Committee on Hemispheric Security (CHS) and Ambassador of Saint Kitts and Nevis, Her Excellency Jacinth Henry-Martin, delivered a powerful address in celebration of the 83rd anniversary of the Inter-American Defense Board (IADB). Speaking before distinguished officials, defense leaders, and ambassadors, Ambassador Henry-Martin underscored the IADB’s role in fostering peace, security, and cooperation across the Americas.

Founded in 1942 during World War II, the Inter-American Defense Board was established as a collective effort to uphold security in the region. Over the past eight decades, the IADB has expanded its mandate beyond military defense to address emerging security challenges, including humanitarian aid, disaster response, cybersecurity, and capacity building.

“Over the past 83 years of its existence, the Inter-American Defense Board has witnessed profound transformations in hemispheric security. Through its military delegations, the Board has promoted dialogue, interoperability, training, scholarship, and capacity building,” said Ambassador Henry-Martin.

 A notable highlight of her address was the recognition of women’s inclusion in peace and security efforts, emphasizing its impact as a force multiplier in defense and stability initiatives.

Ambassador Henry-Martin commended the IADB for embracing a more inclusive role for women, reinforcing the importance of diverse leadership in sustaining regional peace.

Saint Kitts and Nevis’ Ambassador and Chair of CHS also lauded the spirit of partnership and unity that defines the Board’s mission, emphasizing its role in disaster response, cross-border collaboration, and strengthening diplomatic ties. Ambassador henry-Martin reaffirmed the commitment of Saint Kitts and Nevis and the Committee on Hemispheric Security to support initiatives that enhance security and cooperation across the hemisphere.

Her Excellency Jacinth Henry-Martin stressed the continued relevance of the IADB in addressing complex, transnational security threats, including natural disasters, cyberattacks, and regional stability challenges. “In an era marked by complex and transnational threats, from natural disasters to cyberattacks, regional collaboration is not only valuable, but essential,” she stated.

As the IADB commemorates this milestone, Ambassador Henry-Martin expressed optimism that its legacy will inspire greater security cooperation, strategic partnerships, and a strengthened commitment to keeping the Americas a zone of peace for generations to come.
